6 Tips to Maintain the USB Cell Phone Data Cables

Sep. 16, 2021

Data cables are important for electronics. Often, whether it is a USB-c cable or a USB 3.x cable that is used as a phone charging cable, they may not continue to work after a period of time because they receive damage or break. You should take precautions to ensure that your cable lasts a long time so that you don't have to spend money on a new one.

Cell phone cables, just like your headphones or chargers, can break or corrode when you don't use or store them properly. Here are some tips on how to care for your cables and avoid damaging them.

Be gentle

When using cables, don't just pull them out of their sockets or phones. Remove them gently. Hold your fingers firmly near the connector and pull gently. Don't pull the cable and jerk it from the outlet or phone port or you will end up with a damaged cable and a damaged phone port; this will be a much bigger and more expensive problem for you.

Wrap them properly

Some people just stuff cables into drawers or bags, especially when they are in a hurry. These cables then get tangled in the bag or drawer and eventually damage them. To avoid this, wrap them carefully and correctly before storing them. Like a piece of string, gently wrap it around your hand or tie it loosely with a thin rubber band before placing it in a container.

Avoid sharp bends

To avoid damaging the cable, avoid sharp bends. Doing so often will cause the connectors to fall off - the cable will split and expose the internal wiring, rendering your wires useless. Don't squeeze them behind or under anything, as the pressure and tension can quickly cause the cable to break.

For example, if you plug a cell phone charger into the back of a bed or another piece of furniture, do not place the headboard or furniture right up against the charger. Leave some clearance so that the cable is not crushed.

Protective sleeves

When cables are not in use, keep them in a protective sleeve. Purchase protective sleeves with cable pockets for your electronic devices, or generic electronic device and cable organizing sleeves. This will prevent accidents, such as accidentally rolling the cable with an office chair or otherwise crushing, bending and putting pressure on the cable.

Stay out of the sun

If your phone is exposed to sunlight, it will overheat and its internal components may melt. If you leave the cable (and charger, headset, etc.) in the sun, the plastic or rubber wrapped around the cord will melt, eventually causing damage to the cable.

Reinforce cables

Purchase commercial cable protectors (or thin springs) to reinforce multiple cables. Purchase cable protectors made of rubber or other flexible materials. Twist or slide the protector onto the end of the wire where it meets the connector to prevent the wire from breaking due to tension and bending. You simply wrap them around the cable to be protected.

These tips and tricks are sure to help your chargers, headphones and cables last longer. Remember, when it comes to data cables, it's better to prevent damage than to fix them. Contact AIKE to find more about phone cables, we'd be happy to serve you.
